Is bigger better?

The world of London is so different, but in a strange way very much the same. I am starting my fifth week as a Londoner and I am still blown away by the size of everything over here. To understand why I think everything is so big in London, I need to tell you that I come from a small town called Silkeborg in Denmark, a town with approximately 35,000 people. It’s not only the number of people living there, it’s also the number of shops, the size of the companies, it all seems bigger and better.

But I guess there is still a part of the small town boy in me, because I can’t seem to decide if I prefer it bigger or better. I have now seen a couple of ad agencies around London and I seem to fall in love with the small agencies but I am also falling in love with the big agencies’ client lists. Perhaps it’s just because I have to get used to such big agencies, because a normal agency in London is about eight times bigger than the largest in Denmark. Still I can’t seem to get my head around why it is I think a big agency should be better. Is it because they can afford to spend more money, or because they have these big fancy clients. But you never know where a good idea comes from, that could just as easily be from a small agency in the suburbs, than from the big one in central London.  This maybe sound like an attack on the big agencies, but it isn’t, I am just trying to adapt to London ad-land.

I have now explained what I meant when I wrote that London is different, it is just the size that it takes time to adapt to. But what do I mean when I say it is the same. I mean that it is all really big, but people are basically the same. They go to work, do what they do and then go home to their family or friends.

It is a big change in life, moving to London, but if you split every step up into little pieces the change doesn’t seem so big. And after these five weeks I can safely say, I LOVE LONDON.

To end this hopefully without sounding cocky, I can’t wait to follow my own development, to see where I end up, if I go big or small.
