Mariana Simao – 26th January 2012

This weather has been killing me. Apart from literally feeling that I’m dying – I’m thinner, whiter and my skin is falling off it’s so dry.  I have been forced over the past few weeks to really make a bigger effort to keep the creativity alive.

If inspiration is anywhere that means you have to keep your eyes, ears and mind open 24/7.  I think it’s amazing how you can have ideas on the tube, just by looking at an old lady reading the Metro upside down, or in Waterloo station diverting around a pigeon. It’s wonderful. Eyes open, mind working all the time.

But how – and please tell me if you know – can that be done without he same efficiency in the winter? How can our eyes always be open if they’re bloated from the excessive heating or irritated from something that got into them because of the wind? Or maybe they’re just dry from the cold or actually half opened trying to survive from the windy rain… I tell you: it’s hard to keep them open!

How can we keep our ears working if we’re deaf from the cold we caught commuting every day with hundreds of sick people?

And finally… can our minds really think of something other then “i have to keep warm, I have to keep warm” or “god, let’s pray it doesn’t rain today” or “is it worthy to take my coat off now or maybe I should sweat it out for a few minutes “cause I’ll be out in the rain again soon”?

Can we seek inspiration when all we can think about is survival?

Well again… I guess the answer is “you’d better”!
