SCAB Blog post: Advice

For our first group blog of the year we challenged ourselves to think back to day one and recount the best piece of advice or learning that had changed the way we thought and worked. So, here for one blog only is an amalgamation of thoughts, mantras, advice and wisdom, courtesy of mentors, legends, teachers and occasionally each other. We hope you enjoy and if you are a mentor come back to inspire us again soon.

Janne: I was inspired by Buddhist Ben who said we should try to get the audience involved by asking them for THEIR experience in relation to our pitch. Something they relate to gives a greater access point to the rest of the presentation and that way you have their interest from the start.

Alice:  I was inspired by Sir John Hegarty, who said, ‘Don’t compare yourself to average. Look at what is great and it might rub off.’

Sophie: I was inspired by Amelia Gammon who said, ‘No matter what a person’s title is, they’re still just a person’

Emma: My best piece of learning from the School is, ‘When putting an idea down you’re the only one you can trust’.

Helen: The best piece of advice given to me was, ‘Look for inspiration where others aren’t’.

Imogen: Marc once told me ‘don’t chase money, do something you love and are passionate about and you will be great at it, and then success will follow’. That is the best piece of advice I have been given.

Martin: ‘Well, if you’ll just listen to me for a minute…’.

Thirza: I have learnt that, ‘It’s better just to be yourself’.

Amar:  The best piece of advice I have ever been given is, ‘Always be true to yourself’.

Simon: My favourite learning is, ‘Fail in School. Succeed in life’.

Harish:  The best piece of advice I have been given is, ‘Don’t think in the realm of Advertising’.

Rasmus: Blair once told me, ‘Don’t ever assume the person you are talking to knows what you are talking about’.

Danielle: My favourite mantra is, ‘You don’t learn by winning, you learn by failing and realising your mistakes’.

Olly: My advice which I now live by is, ‘If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right’.

Charlie: There have been far too many pieces of advice to pick one to stand alone so instead I’m giving you the best quote I’ve heard from Sir John Hegarty on owning a vineyard , ‘I’ve got God as one of my partners, and he’s useless.’

Jess: One great bit of advice from Sir John Hegarty is, ‘The truth is disarming’.

Katie: I have learnt to, ‘Always ask the stupid question’.

Cooper: Someone once told me, ‘Write copy like a sonnet’.

Tom:  John Hegarty told me ‘When you’re very successful, and you will be, never buy a vineyard, it’ll ruin you’.

Arvid: I live by the mantra, ‘You snooze, you lose’.

Rosie:  We were told in the first week that when , ‘your creative director shoots down ideas, come back with ten more’. This is a great attitude to have towards work.
