I feel like I haven’t spoken to you in days.

A few penguins have told me that in the last few days. I have seen them, of course. But somehow I’ve managed to make our relatively small studio into the size of China. I haven’t been getting around the space enough to talk to others.

Most of us now have our regular seats and tables in the room. When we come in, we head straight to our adopted homes. We sit in the same place day in, day out. The people sat near you become your neighbours. And groups of tables become little communities. Food is shared between us. Ideas too. Laughter is just yards away.

Each community in the studio has their quirks. Some have more public services (plug points), others have a better climate (lighting).

Wherever they are, everyone seems settled in their areas. It’s easy to fall into routine. And since finding my spot, I’ve ventured around the room far less.

Yes, we’re busy with our work. But I should really spend more time chatting with penguins on the other side of the room. It doesn’t take much to look up, climb over the neighbour’s fence and see how the rest of the town are getting on.

This all came to light at Dave Buonaguidi’s charity auction – held at CP+B – to fund scholarships for SCA. I got to spend time with people I hadn’t seen much over the past few weeks. And it was a fitting occasion. The night was all about people getting together to help out others. I’d forgotten to actually spend time with others.

‘I feel like I haven’t spoken to you in days.’ Hope I don’t hear that as much next week.
