Lyric me this – By @Holly_Georgious

Lyric me this

Last week I boldly made a statement, in which I may have claimed that a certain Ronan Keating song was (in my opinion) one of the best and most quotable songs ever written. As unpopular as that opinion maybe, this is not the SCAB where I take it all back. Far from it. In fact, if anything I feel my point may very well be enhanced by the end of these 500 words. Which got me thinking, how many other throw away songs actually express a deeper commentary on life? So here are a few I found and why they may very well be a  philosophical phenomenon.

Starting with the genius melody in question: Ronan Keating – Life is a Rollercoaster, the chorus famously says:

‘We found love, oh
So don’t fight it
Life is a rollercoaster
Just gotta ride it
I need you, ooh
So stop hiding
Our love is a mystery
Girl, let’s get inside it.’

Ignoring the ‘Ohs’ and ‘ahs’ for…well completely and taking this song out of the context of love for a moment (although it very well works for that to) you are left with ‘ Life is a rollercoaster (you) just gotta ride it.’ Which Ronan, honey, is very true. Love. Rollercoaster. Life. A Rollercoaster. The emotional push and pull of knowing you should go to the gym but cannot be bothered only to find out when you eventually get there that it is closed for maintenance. A BLOODY ROLLERCOASTER. In fact, I challenge you to name one thing in life which is not a rollercoaster because I guarantee an argument can be made for it. He goes on to say ‘Our love is a mystery Girl lets get inside it.’ I’d rather not get in to the ins and out of what want ‘lets get inside it‘ might mean,  but I think we can all agree that ‘love’ really is as a mystery Ronan, well put!

Our next absolute gem of a song is the legend that is : The Spice girls – Wannabe, which we all know goes:

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends
(Gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever, friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give
Taking is too easy, but that’s the way it is’

Before we take a shallow swim in to the depth that is the lyrics, it obviously goes without saying that ‘you gotta get with my friends’ does not mean GET WITH, as in kiss my friends, but instead ‘get with’ as in get on with. If you were to GET WITH my friends you will very much and certainly not be my lover. In fact, it is a sure fire way to make sure you will never be my lover so please do not GET WITH my friends.

Footnotes aside it is true that for many girls their partners do need to get on with our friends and you should make it last forever because ‘friendships’ really do ‘never end.’ So in that sense the Spice Girls are very much correct. And if we are all being very honest with ourselves everything in this world is take take take, which is pretty annoying, unattractive and just generally tiring. So to be fair ‘If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give, Taking is too easy,  …that’s the way it is’ and you can’t really argue with that.

Third and final melody comes in the form of a pre-teen Holly favourite: SClub- Best Friends

‘Best friend, never gonna let you down.
Best friend, always gonna be around.
You know, whatever life puts you through,
I’ll be there for you.
We all need a best friend to understand,
A best friend, to take your hand,
You know whatever life puts you through,
I’ll be there for you.’

YES S CLUB (claps all round) best friends are ‘never gonna let you down’ best friends are ‘ always gonna be around’ and you do know that ‘whatever life puts you through.’ They will be ‘there for you.’ Could you define the role of a best friend better? I think not. In fact, S Club (at that point still 7)  so accurate are your lyrics that you could even use them as a check list to see If said person really is your best friend. I feel there is no need to say anything more about this other than Brava to your accurately spouting of lyrical friendship truths.

So, there you have it, a few inspirational songs for you. So next time you’re having a dull day or are in need for a little pick me up, go and put on a cup of tea and pop on some Ronny K, Spicy G or even S Club 7s and I am sure you will be enlightened by the lyrics within.

And you know what? I stand by it. Don’t worry Ronan I’ve got your back hun.
