Mental Strength – By @j_kburgess

Mental Strength

I believe that we are all stronger than we think we are. It’s said that it’s your mind that gives up before your body and I think that’s absolutely true. Your body is a machine and it can be put through more than you can ever imagine. We are built to stay alive but because we aren’t put in life or death situation every day, we don’t push ourselves to the max, to our full potential. I mean, why would you when sweet comfort is only a step away. Like physical strength though I think mental strength can be practised. I saw this all this term when half the students signed up for comedy. I know it’s not a life and death situation but it is really fucking scary for some people and I can bet you know that at some point nearly everyone was like Nah fuck it, I can just quit it will be fine. Mental strength is the voice that tells you to keep going, through your anxieties and your self-deprecation its that small sound inside you that pushes you to stay on your path. So for everyone that stuck at it, you inspire me.

It’s not easy though, to push through. To push through the doubt or the pain and the worry. But I do think that the more you focus, the more you feel in control and the easier it is. I don’t know if you’ve seen SAS who dares wins and if you haven’t I really do recommend it, especially if it’s not something that you would usually watch. ( Collect those dots and all that) Anyway, It’s basically a trial to see if you could become part of the SAS but its a competition and it’s filmed.  The last 14 hours are called the interrogation. This is where they get kidnapped by the enemy, blindfolded, put in a stress position and they have to listen to the same music over and over again. It’s horrible.  It’s the mental focus that gets them through though.  ( complete side note but interestingly it was the men that got more emotional when they found out that they had passed the course and the torture was over then the women. That’s a different scab all together. ) It’s the choice to just keep on going through that pushes them to the end. Everyone has that ability, to tell themselves to just go a little bit further, to work that little bit harder and with DandAD coming up, I want everyone to know that they are stronger than they think they are. And when you feel like you given all that you can give just think you can always give it a little bit more. I dare you to try and push yourself to your full potential. Go on. No one will see. And you never know, you might surprise yourself with how brilliant you are.
