One of our own. – By @Holly_Georgious

By Holly Georgious

One of our own.

At the end of this week we will lose one of our own. He will not be the first we have lost and sadly he probably won’t be the last and yet, despite this, his leaving seems the most poignant. The most raw. The most painful. His leaving is somewhat of a surprise to many, not knowing what was going on behind the scenes, the problems that were occurring or depth of the issue, and the reason, although understandable, was, for some, a bitter pill to swallow. It is a hard lesson to learn, for all involved, that life does not always work out how you planned. That the world does not give out free passes and the universe is not in the business of granting miracles. A stark reminder to us all that the world owes you no favours.

Maybe that is part of the reason why it is so hard to accept. Because, in reality many of us could have been in the same position.  Without going in to too many details, because they are not mine to tell, a different circumstance, a different random outcome or a differing stroke of luck and the situation would have been the same for any of us.

I think the hardest thing though, is not the randomness of it, but instead the nature of who it is, as part of the course and collectivist mentality that’s been instilled in us. You see the person who is going, let’s call him person B. is without a doubt one of the most talent artists we have. His talent is undeniable, his artwork, his scamps are beautiful beyond belief and his ability to turn even the smuttiest of ideas into a visual masterpiece is verging on a joke.

But B is so much more than just his work.

From our very first conversation outside market house, where B stood, wine in hand, he has been a complete and utter joy. He has brought a humour, a sass, a cheek to SCA that has brightened us all at times. His vulnerability and his openness adds an authenticity that others are too scared to have. His sass is witty and his compliments are felt. His light has dark. His humour has honesty and his intelligence has thought. He is easy to confide in. He is kind, he is caring and my god he is funny.

At SCA we are a family. When one wins, we all win. When one falls , we all fall. And when someone leaves it is felt. They are missed. When Friday comes around a tall slim hole will be left in the heart of our family and although it is for the best it will hurt none the less.

So B although you may not be finishing the year with us, or continuing this mad journey that we call SCA , you will always be a part of our little family. I think, no, I know, I can speak for everyone when I say that wherever you go and whatever you do you, we will miss you and you will be welcomed. And bugger me, when the time is right and if you still want to, you will blow the advertising world away.

This piece wouldn’t be complete without finishing it a quote from one of the greatest Dr. Seuss books of all time (Oh The Places You’ll Go!) so here it is, WE LOVE YOU! :

‘’And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)
KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So…
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So… get on your way!’’
