The Odd Couple

I have recently moved house. I have swapped my two fellow creative roommates for a very normal Scottish couple. I have been living with them for a couple of weeks now and it has been a very educational experience so far, let me explain…

It’s this time of the year at SCA again, where uncertainty is in the air. I have talked to a couple of Coupers and few of them confessed they were thinking of becoming a single creative. They did not see anyone in the room they wanted to date, well hopefully not yet.

Looking back at my Scottish couple, I am sometimes wondering what got them together, they are so different. He is a quiet music director half of the week and works at Vodafone the rest of the time to make ends meet. She is a bubbly salesperson working for a French luxury beauty brand. She spends most of her days on the road, while he works from home or at the phone store. However, they seem to have one common passion, every night they meet up in the living room where they binge watch for hours. I have often ventured in this giggly room, to see them both laughing in tears watching “I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here!” or “The X-factor”. I might be wrong but it seems these two might very well end up together for no other reason than similar tastes in entertainment. The point I want to make is that these affinities are strong enough to make them stick together. When we choose our partner, I find we sometimes forget that there is no perfect partner.  You cannot score high on every attribute, you only need to tick some key aspects.

And just as the Scots, it’s often the most unexpected people who work the best together. So, if you think you won’t find the right match, take another look around.  It might be the Couper you don’t often speak to very often who will be the one.
