I was pleasantly introduced to the power of “gratitude” by Marc at my first meeting at SCA. Marc underscored the importance of gratitude-ing (yes, that’s a word, I made it up just 30 seconds ago) and informed us that gratitude journaling can increase our success rate by 30 percent – fucking simple right? The benefits of journaling every day go beyond career advancement. According to Harvard medical school (source below) there are some strong claims that gratitude can decrease overall anxiety, as well as “relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships”, it goes without saying that enhancing our social skills is pretty important, not only for a more fulfilling life, but also for advancement in the advertising industry. As a result of Marc’s suggestion, I greet every morning after I wake up and express gratitude. Throughout the years it has not been easy to “love” myself so to speak, so this is truly a paradigmatic discovery. In my notebook journal, I have already written down 3-5 things that I am grateful for in my life, and I have already noticed a noticeable difference. A sense of gratitude can be compared to the classical “glass half full” analogy, which puts things in perspective. It is important to maintain a positive mindset to attain a high-quality life and to improve one’s mental health, something that has been particularly challenging during the past three years. Listed below are some of the things I’m grateful for that have changed my perspective on life:

  1. I am grateful that I earned a place at School of Communication Arts 2.0

Because Marc handpicks the best and most dedicated talent, I am grateful for every single day of this incredible opportunity working alongside extraordinarily creative students. There may be many things I have to sacrifice which I hate, such as getting up at 5:55am in the morning, however I know it will all be worth it in the end

2. I am grateful for having the courage to cut toxic people of my life

Self-explanatory. This may hit home but cutting out certain (toxic men) from my life did a world of good for me. My journey helped me evolve and pluck up the courage to remove toxicity from my life, and this applies to cutting off anything that does not bring me joy.

3. I am grateful to have good friends around me

I am grateful for the support my friends have given me during my darkest hours, when I have tantrums (especially about losing things). I am very grateful for having friends who have the patience to put up with my crazy breakdowns at my worst days. It is important to keep your loved ones close and appreciate the friendships you hold close.

As a summary: cultivating gratitude is the key to better relationships with yourself and practicing self-love. We are all left with ourselves at the end of the day, so it is important to be kind to ourselves and not to be too hard on ourselves.
