What do you write when you can’t think of anything to write?

The first thing to do when you’re writing and can’t think of anything to write is to start writing. This is a great first step, because it’ll get you writing without you needing to think of anything to write. You can use this first bit of writing as the first piece of information that will ultimately form the basis of the thing you’re writing about.

After you’ve done a little bit of that, a time will come when you’ll need to find a new point to start writing about. Find one. This is an excellent way to continue the process of writing and further evolve the ideas conveyed by the writing you’ve written. Writing is really a series of things that a writer has written with the goal of having them eventually read, either by themselves or another person entirely.

Next, slow things down. Do some slower-paced writing. Give the reader something to think about so they feel like a part of a conversation, rather than just a reader. If you can get the reader invested in your writing, that’s great writing. It will make the reader feel more invested.

After the second point and the slower bit, it’s probably time to add a third point. Ideally, this should be a counterpoint to one of the previous points you’ve pointed out. You don’t just want your writing to be read, you want it to say something worth reading. Don’t try to catch yourself out here. You’re trying to provide a balanced argument. Saying something and then starting to argue with what you’ve said makes you sound thoughtful and smart. Just make sure you eventually overcome that argument and continue along the path you were previously on. The most important thing your writing can be, is read.

Statistics are always useful. Every time a statistic is included in a piece of writing, it will add a statistical element to that piece. This is valuable if you’re looking to involve something other than just writing in your writing, which is something you might want to do at some point.

Eventually, you’ll start to run out of things to add to your writing. Don’t stop now. If a piece of writing is very short, it might be too short for certain uses. Just make sure it isn’t too long either. This can also be problematic when writing things in small places, or to be read in a short amount of time. Find out how long your piece of writing needs to be, and aim to create something that is close to that length. That will give you the best chance of writing something that is right for the place it will go.

Finally, remind the reader why they’ve even bothered reading this writing with a reminder of some of the most important things you wrote about. Including the first thing you said, the bit where you said another thing to add something to the first thing, and the final part you added also.
