SCABs

5 Ways to Pick a Scab

Picking a scab can be a painful process. You don’t want to botch it, but you don’t want to spend too much time on it either. If only there were a set of rules for you to follow or ignore that would make it all easier or harder.

You’re welcome.

1 – Choose something that interests you, or not

Don’t worry about what looks good on the website. Just find a topic you enjoy writing about, and write about it. I’m a month in and I’ve avoided writing anything directly related to advertising. If that doesn’t inspire you, nothing will. If you enjoy the thing you’re writing, someone else will probably enjoy reading it. Unless you have really weird hobbies…

Alternatively, choose something you have no interest in at all. That’s also an option available to you.

2 – Choose something you know a bit about, or not

If you know a bit about it, the words come easily. One of the best ways to live your life is to become familiar with a few things, and stick to them forever. This way, you’ll be able to appear very knowledgeable and win arguments in the few conversations you’re willing to be a part of.

Alternatively, write about something you know nothing about. Learning isn’t so bad after all.

3 – Choose something the night before your deadline, or not

I’ve never really believed in starting things a month in advance. If you added a word a day to a Google Doc, you’d end up writing a Frankenstein’s Monster of a blog. To make it cohesive, you’ve got to write it all feeling stressed the night before. Also, the fear of a deadline adds a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to your writing. Call it the salt of essays.

Alternatively, choose something after your deadline has actually passed. Turn that stress up to eleven and see what your terrified mind is really capable of.

4 – Choose something, or not

I’d definitely recommend choosing something. Writing a blog about nothing isn’t impossible, but it’s not much fun either.

Alternatively, write about nothing. See my previous blog for inspiration: https://schoolcommunicationarts.com/what-do-you-write-when-you-cant-think-of-anything-to-write/

5 – Choose something you can write 500 words about

SCA set us a 500-word minimum word count, which isn’t really much, but if you’re trying to write an article ranking cereal mascots (my last discarded effort), you might be in trouble.

Roughly block out your article before you start to make sure you can write enough.

Alternatively, leave a large white space at the bottom of your blog containing white text to trick the school.
