Music Videos To Draw Inspiration From
Before the SCA I worked in the music industry on music video, press shoots etc. I am obsessed with great storytelling in a music video that sucks you in. Here is a list of my favourite music videos right now.
Childish Gambino – This is America
2 years before Breonna Taylor and George Floyd this video went viral for its clever messages strategically placed throughout, depicting the struggle and contradictory nuances of being a black American. If you haven’t seen Guava Island, the film it’s from, get to Amazon movies now!
Jay- Z – Moonlight
Let’s talk about Tiffany Haddish as Pheobe!! Genius casting for this music video concept – Black F.R.I.E.N.D.S. The Friends’ show black people didn’t ask for or need but that definitely will fill a little hole in your heart. It’s the perfect nod towards Friends being a version of 1993’s Living Single. But the best part is the real soundbite from the Oscars when ‘La La Land’ was mistakenly awarded for Best Picture, despite ‘Moonlight’ being the film that actually won.
Beyonce – Pretty Hurts
Perfection is a disease of a nation. A beautifully filmed video of the hidden side to trying to be perfect. Shot against the backdrop of a beauty pageant and all the emotions felt in private versus what is shown on the stage.
Busta Rhymes – Gimmie Some More
Directed by Hype Williams, need I say more? I don’t know how to describe this video other than a wonderful trip!
Lewis Capaldi – Wish You The Best
All the soppy, teary eyed feels for this video. My favourite thing about this video is that it’s done from the point of view of the dog but with all the human emotion still attached. Watch for inspo on how to make people weep in just 3 minutes.
Doja Cat – Vegas
Homage to Big Mama Thornton’s original ‘Hound Dog’. My favourite thing about this video is the energy and vibrancy of the colours. The church scenes, the car, the club, the musicians, all vibes for the whole song.
Tyler The Creator EARFQUAKE – YouTube
