PLEASE, DON’T HATE MUSLIMS
Last time I wrote a SCAB about a woman I met at a pub, who begged me to hate Muslims. I thought it was funny at first, but now, not anymore.
I come from a Muslim background. My Dad was born in Algeria and moved to France with his family when he was 4. It was shortly after the Algerian War, when the French army slaughtered millions of people (or hundreds of thousands – depending on which side of the Mediterranean the historians were born.) My Mom’s family also moved from Algeria, but a bit earlier: 2 years before her birth. I was born and bred in France.
Although my Mom doesn’t believe in God and has certain distaste towards Islam due to traumatic events in her childhood, her whole family is Muslim. My dad is Muslim, and so is his family. They both grew up in a heavily Muslim environment, and therefore so did I. I strongly dislike Islam, like I dislike any other monotheistic religion. I don’t believe in any dictatorial authority telling you what to do without properly explaining it, and threatening you of endless agony in hell if you don’t follow the rules. Especially since all of them share the same God but follow completely different rules – nonsense. But I respect all religious people, because I believe in freedom of cult. Everyone should have the right to believe in whatever they want, and behave the way they want as long as they don’t hurt anybody. And Muslims do not hurt anybody. I know it for a fact. Almost all my relatives live in those French estates you see in films, which means that I used to hang out there quite a lot, playing football or basketball. Most of the people living there were children of immigrants. Most of them were Muslims. If you go there on a Friday, it’s like a little Maghreb. It’s beautiful.
I feel like I’m drifting a bit, so let me get back on track. The reason I’m writing this blog is to clarify something with everyone reading this – mentors, students, and anyone else.
Muslims do not kill people. Muslims do not beat their wives. Muslims do not blow themselves up for their religion. Muslims didn’t do what happened in Paris yesterday, in Lebanon on Thursday, or everyday in Syria. Sick people did, and they soiled the names of all Muslims by acting in the name of Allah.
My relatives, who are all Muslims – serious ones, as they follow the five pillars of Islam: faith, prayer, charity, fasting and pilgrimage to Mecca – are as shocked as any other French person, and they all condemn what happened on Friday.
Oh, and one last thing,
No Muslim is responsible for any of those things, and therefore none of them should ever apologize or justify what happened. If you think they do, I’m sorry but go fuck yourself.
