Sleeping around

So we are now five weeks in. Everyone is settled in (for the most part) and now we come to the part of the year known as, ‘sleeping around’. The idea is that we work with everyone on the course at least once, with an aim to pairing up at the end of the year.

Traditionally, creative teams are made up of a copywriter and an art director. From what I understand, the students here at Brixton are about 80% copywriters, with six of the art directors heading back to France in Dec. So it looks like some of the copywriters will need to turn their hand to art direction, or perhaps we will have pairs made up of hybrids. I came into the course fairly sure I was a copywriter, but am now thinking I may be more of a hybrid, but let’s see what happens.

The more daunting side of this process is pairing up with someone. Traditionally I have worked alone and usually end up being really precious with my work and ideas initially. That’s already changed, for the better. But the idea of trying to analyse my ability to work in a team, with numerous new people, whilst analysing them at the same time, building a working relationship with them and selling myself as a potential partner is quite a task. I’m very aware that I can’t be guided purely by who I get on well with, or who I have the most fun with, although having fun definitely contributes to making good work. So maybe for now, that’s a good place to start.
