The Life Of A Slow Girl

Starting SCA after ten years away from the university game made one thing instantly clear: my brain has been firmly stuck in slug mode for quite some time.

The first week was a whirlwind of exciting creative energy and idea sharing, constantly punctuated by the panicked thought loop of, "Am I completely out of my technical depth?" Luckily, that panic was soothed on the very first day when I heard Mark say that the people who don't get everything straight away are often the ones who end up being the Dark Horse by the end of the course. That one statement was a game-changer.

My recent ADHD diagnosis has helped me understand the almighty nuisance that is executive dysfunction, low frustration tolerance, and the simple fact that I just need more time to think about how to even begin certain tasks. The beautiful irony of ADHD, however, is that short, sharp deadlines are the ideal motivator to enter into that glorious state of hyperfocus mode, which SCA thankfully provides in abundance!

By week three, I'm already seeing my "slug mode" progress into a decent pace. I'm still fighting my way through FAL, LORAs, and Photoshop, but I have hope. I'm making a solemn promise: by the end of Term 1, I’ll have officially broken up with Canva and be an Adobe hun 4 lyf.

(Though, no shade to her success, I do genuinely wonder if the typography on Taylor Swift's latest album was made using Canva. Just a curious thought!)

If Taylor can churn out a never-ending cycle of albums while simultaneously on the Eras Tour, I’m sure I can quicken the pace with learning all these new programs.

So here’s to the life of the Show and Slow Girl. May we all embrace and confess to our inner slug, and continue taking small, consistent steps that will be what eventually gets us to the bigger (most likey AI generated) picture.
